$60 for a SCSI Hard Drive interface that will work on my 800XL?
SIO or PBI?
I seem to remember that an EPROM had to be burned with the drive specifications (Heads, cylinders, etc...)... am I imagining this?
What DOS's are supported? Maximum number of partitions? Support for more than 8/9 active partitions?
Because I accidentally sold my old Adaptec 4000 with my old Volkswagen, can anyone name some readily available SCSI drives that do 256byte sectors? Could I use a 512byte sector drive and only use half the capacity of the drive?
Thanks!
-Anthony

Was it really that clever? I used to have a sampling cartridge produced by 2bit systems in the UK and made lots of audio samples both for use in games and just because I could <grin>. Was such stuff not common elsewhere? Was this demo exceptionally long or something?

I've had for a while the Parrot audio sampler for my atari 800. It's like a single paddle controller used to adjust gain and it has a mini 1/8 jack to plug in a mike or a tape deck. There were probably many of these kinds of samplers made by different people. Mo

Well, at that time (1982-1984) it was really clever. Not many people knew how to sample something on an Atari (nor on an IBM!). And how many sound samples were around at that time - not many, I believe. Maybe Ghostbusters, E.T., Whomper stomper and a few more titles. Only a few Atarians had sampling systems at that early time... -Andreas
P.S.: On the other hand, sampling was an easy thing in later years. Quite many sampling systems (home made and commercial) were around. Most were 2Bit sampling systems - and I am not pretty sure if the Van Halen demo was/is really 4Bit or also just 2Bit...

That is true. I remember how friends interested in home computing came to see me just to hear my Atari play the sequence of Van Halen's "You really got me" song. (The song was originally made by the Kinks, right?)

Add to that list the fantastic synthesized speech in the 16 KB Berzerk cartridge. (Or is it 8 KB?)

ISTR there were projects published that allowed you to sample via the paddle ports around that time.

Hi Bob,
I live in France and when I was a teenager I owned an Atari 800XL + 1050 with the "floppy disk" of Van Halen's song. That was multimedia !
Now I am 31 and I have bought a second hand Atari 800XL for my children...
Regards
Bruno

Hmmm ?!? I think it is/was a 2Bit sample, just 16kbytes short. But the Sample "You really got me" - wasn`t that from the KINKS ??? -Andreas
P.S. The same KINKS that sung LOLA (lalalalalola...)
